Redfield are pushing hard for the equaliser now. Kessler has dropped deep to try and win possession back — he's everywhere tonight. City are holding their shape well but you can feel the crowd getting nervous. Seventeen minutes left. Feels like an hour.
I've been at loads of grounds over the years — does the atmosphere at Northgate compare to a World Cup stadium?
Managed to get to Qatar in 2022 and it genuinely changed how I watch football. The noise, the colour, the chaos. Tonight reminds me of it a little — the away end have been incredible. Northgate is a proper old ground and it gets loud. Loving every minute.
Francesca, you've hit the nail on the head. The away end tonight has been something special — I've covered Northgate for six years and I'm not sure I've heard it louder. As for the World Cup comparison... honestly, nothing quite matches it. But on a cold Tuesday in April with a title race on the line? This comes close.
— James ThornWorth noting what City have done tactically since the break. They've shifted to a back five when out of possession, effectively clogging the channels Redfield used to devastating effect in the first half. Marcus Webb, deployed as an inverted right wing-back, is having a quietly brilliant game that the stats won't fully capture.
The xG map tells its own story: City are sitting on 2.3, Redfield on 0.8. The scoreline is entirely fair.
Diallo makes no mistake from the spot
Coolest man in the stadium. Oumar Diallo took about fourteen steps back, waited for Redfield keeper Sørensen to dive early, then rolled it into the opposite corner like he was posting a letter. The Northgate end absolutely erupted.
The penalty itself was soft — Webb went down under a challenge from Hartley that, on another night, a referee might wave away. But Hartley grabbed his shirt, so here we are. 2–1 City.
VAR review for a potential handball in the Redfield penalty area. Webb's cross hit Hartley's arm, which was in a slightly extended position. We're waiting... and it's given. Penalty to Northgate City.
Sørensen is furious. Redfield manager Luca Ferrini has already been booked for his protests on the touchline. This has gone from a tight game to a chaotic one very quickly.
And we're back. City have made one change at the break — Tomáš Blažek on for the limping Adeyemi. He looked fine warming up, but clearly City's medical staff thought otherwise. Blažek hasn't started in three weeks but he's a player who tends to raise his game on occasions like this.
City lead at the break — but Redfield aren't done
A half of two completely distinct halves within itself, if that makes any sense. City dominated the opening 25 minutes, went ahead through Diallo's excellent finish, then sat back and invited pressure they didn't always handle comfortably.
Redfield's equaliser — a stunning volley from Kessler that the goalkeeper had absolutely no chance with — was the goal of the season contender that briefly made this feel like a different game. City's second from a corner, though scrappy, settled the nerves somewhat. 2–1 City at the break. Entirely reasonable scoreline.
Okonkwo sees red — City down to ten
Calamitous. Victor Okonkwo, who had been having a fine game until this moment, lunged in on Mendez right on the edge of the box. Two feet, high, studs showing. The referee didn't hesitate and frankly, he was right not to. Straight red.
City will play the final 52 minutes plus stoppage time with ten men. The crowd have gone very quiet. Ferrini is punching the air on the Redfield bench.
Corner routine catches Redfield cold
It's not pretty, but City won't care. A short corner routine found Blaise at the back post, his header was blocked on the line, and substitute Tomáš Blažek — sorry, still starting Adeyemi at this point — bundled it over from a yard out. Replays suggest it may have come off his shin. His knee. His elbow. One of those. 2–1.
Kessler. Absolute. Rocket.
We're going to be talking about this goal for a long time. The ball drops to Kessler just inside the area, he doesn't even look up, and he has absolutely leathered it into the top corner from 18 yards on the volley. The goalkeeper moved in completely the wrong direction. The entire away end have lost their minds.
That is genuinely one of the best goals scored at Northgate Stadium since it opened. Stunning. 1–1.
Diallo opens the scoring with a clinical finish
If you blinked, you missed it. Webb played a beautifully weighted through ball between the Redfield centre-backs, Diallo took one touch to control and a second to slot it calmly past Sørensen. It looked effortless. It was anything but — his movement to lose his marker before the pass was made was exceptional.
City 1, Redfield 0. The home crowd are up.
We're underway at Northgate
Welcome to The Roar's live coverage of what promises to be a cracking top-half clash. Northgate City kick off in their traditional blue, Redfield in a rather fetching away salmon. Yes, salmon. Their kit sponsors must be very proud.
