50-1, 40-1, 25-1 and 20-1: The Cambridgeshire has thrown up plenty of upsets in recent years - who could be next in Saturday's big handicap?

One of Newmarket's biggest handicaps of the year takes place on Saturday in the bet365 Cambridgeshire (3.40), and the race is no stranger to throwing up a shock.

In the last ten runnings of the £200,000 contest there has been only one winning favourite, when Frankie Dettori guided Lord North to victory at 9-2 in 2019.

The other nine runnings have produced eight double-figure-priced winners, including 50-1 Dolphin Vista in 2017, 40-1 scorers in 2020 and 2021, and winners at 25-1 and 20-1.

We have picked out three contenders in this year's line-up who look overpriced to run a big race and could cause an upset.

Spanish Voice (18-1)

With Andrew Balding still firmly in the trainers' championship race, landing the £100,000 first prize for this handicap would be another timely boost.

Oisin Murphy is back aboard the Balding-trained four-year-old, and it is not often the pair combine on a horse available at these sort of odds.

His three career turf wins have all come at Newmarket, with two of those on the Rowley Mile, and he is only 2lb above his last winning mark. He was below par when the 9-2 favourite at Ascot last time, but a return to this track could be exactly what he needs.

Thunder Run (20-1)

Karl Burke has won the Cambridgeshire in each of the last two seasons with Liberty Lane (8-1) and last year's winner Boiling Point (14-1), and Thunder Run looks a big price for a trainer with that sort of record.

The five-year-old looked as good as ever when winning at Doncaster last time and, although that leaves him with a 4lb penalty, he can be dangerous if taking another step forward.

He also has to shoulder top weight, but so did Boiling Point and Liberty Lane, and it did not stop either charging to victory on the Rowley Mile. If anyone can prepare a top weight for this prize, history suggests it is Burke.

Spell Master (25-1)

The Oli Rix-trained Spell Master may be without a win for almost a year, but he has shaped with promise in some major handicaps on his recent starts.

He may have found 1m2½f a touch beyond him when sixth to Raammee in the John Smith's Cup, before being denied a clear run when beaten three and a half lengths into seventh in a Glorious Goodwood handicap over this trip.

He then rallied to finish third in a competitive Ebor meeting handicap last time and looks the sort who, if everything falls his way – no easy task in a race like this – could outrun odds of 25-1.

Silvestre de Sousa is in the saddle for the first time, taking over from Ray Dawson.

Principality (28-1)

The Harry Eustace-trained Principality has been consistent all season if you ignore his reappearance in March. His form figures since then read 15142 and, with some firms paying more than five places, he stands out as an appealing each-way option at his current price.

He won on Newmarket's July course over a mile in August off a mark of 89 and has since produced two solid efforts from his current rating of 91.

His latest run offers further encouragement. He finished strongly to be second behind Looka in a Salisbury handicap and may have gone even closer with a clearer passage. This is a step up in class, but if he builds on that performance he could have a big say under Kaiya Fraser.
